Lake Superior

Lake Superior

I created this pattern in 1982. It was developed for a competition to create a dinnerware service for the retiring Governor of Michigan, Bill Milliken and his wife Helen. I won the competition and earned the commission. It is influenced by Grisaille enamel work. First I lay down two layers of deep cobalt blue slip on the raw pot. When it dries I create the design with porcelain slip using brushes and a slip trailer. It is glazed in I very light celadon green that intensifies the blue and gives gentle highlights to the white slip brushwork. This pattern is specific as to color and pattern. The Lake Superior refers to the color, white brushwork on a deep blue background. White Caps refers to the rolling wave going across and throwing off spray.
