About the Colors

Georgian Bay

This pattern was created as a complement to Lake Superior. It is a more traditional use of cobalt blue. Most of the pieces are done in white porcelain and decorated with a blue slip. The brushwork will vary from piece to piece. Some of the pieces cannot be made in porcelain because they go into the oven. These I make in stoneware and then cover in a porcelain slip before I decorate with the blue slip. It is named after an exceptional clear and brilliant body of water found east of the northern tip of Lake Huron. The water in Georgian Bay is very clear and cold. Along the Bruce Peninsula there are limestone cliffs that extend down into the water. Standing on these cliffs on a sunny day you can look down into the water and observe the downward extension of the cliff face below the surface of the water for upwards to 75 feet.
