Copper Harbor

Copper Harbor

Copper Compounds have been used as source of color in ceramics since the Egyptians used copper salts to flux clay into self-glazing decorative objects. These bright turquoise pieces are called Egyptian Paste and are usually in the form of scarabs or other small objects. Copper is probably the second most versatile colorant in the potter's toolbox. It can produce greens, blues, turquoises, pinks, purples, and reds. To create Copper Harbor I use a highly reactive copper bearing matt glaze over white slip decoration. The color can range from a light green to turquoise to a blush pink. The brush-work varies from piece to piece. The color varies from piece to piece on each piece and from one side to the other. On functional pieces such as cups or pitchers I use a complimentary gloss glaze to line the inside for ease in cleaning.
