I. B. Remsen Studio Tour 6

I. B. Remsen Studio Tour 7

Up in the second floor of the studio. Before I built this studio I had worked in the basement of the house for 10 years. In the basement I would go for days not knowing what each day had been like. This studio has skylights and windows facing east south and west. It is a pleasant airy work space nestled up under and between the trees in the back yard.

Here I am working on the oldest wheel in my shop. I built it myself from plans ordered through the Whole Earth Catalog in 1972. It is all wood, 4 by 4's and 2 by 4's bolted together for a frame and seat. It gets its momentum from a cast cement flywheel. In front of me but not in the picture is an enameled cast iron stove in which I burn wood in the winter. Summer or winter when I want some quiet moments I get on the old kick wheel. It's slower going and a bit more work but much more meditative.
